Brand Associates Music Series - Ensemble Flame

Evening Concert in the Recital Hall

Join us for an evening of music. Ensemble Flame, an early music group, is composed of instruments that were at the heart of the king’s court in France in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Brand Associates Music Series features virtuosos from Southern California performing repertoire favorites and new music by living composers. All concerts will take place in the Brand Library Recital Hall. Admission is free and seating is limited. Sponsored by the Brand Associates.

Ensemble Flame consists of Eric Tinkerhess playing viola da gamba, Mana Tinkerhess playing triple harp and Robert Wang performing on the theorbo. Ensemble Flame is composed of instruments that were at the heart of the king’s court in France in the 17th and 18th centuries. Dedicated especially to French music, Ensemble Flame transmits the instruments’ warmth by imagining the music as a poem, appeasing our wavering spirits invaded by the passions of the soul. https://www.ensembleflame.com/ 

Program: The Pain of Love: A Thousand Years of Song and Dance

Ensemble Flame presents a musical journey from the earliest notated melodies of medieval troubadours and trobairitz to the virtuosic instrumental music of the baroque era. The pain of love is a recurring theme of poets and musicians from the past thousand years. Some of the first printed books of instrumental music from the Renaissance include arrangements of vocal love songs. Extracts of philosophy and odes to nature appease the passions of the soul, aided by Ensemble Flame’s ancient instruments: the voice, lute, triple harp and viola da gamba.
