Join us for a curator/artist exhibit walkthrough and artist-led workshop in conjunction with the current exhibition at Brand Library & Art Center, Artifacts from an Unborn Empire.
At 2:00 PM:
Curators Jason Jenn and Vojislav Radovanović will lead a walkthrough of the gallery exhibition for patrons to learn more about the curatorial themes and artworks on view.
At 3:00 PM:
Join exhibition artist Marcus Kuiland-Nazario in the Recital Hall adjacent to the gallery for 'The Last Word Is Yours: Epitaph as Self-Portrait', a participatory workshop exploring the epitaph as a surprisingly revealing—and occasionally mischievous—form of self-portraiture. Drawing from his work in the exhibition Artifacts From An Unknown Empire, Kuiland-Nazario will share stories, examples of famous last words and memorable epitaphs, and a few thoughts on what we choose to say when we imagine we can no longer say anything at all.
About the exhibition:
Artifacts from an Unborn Empire gathers artists to reconsider how civilizations are formed and who gets to define them. Through a range of natural and manufactured materials, they play with and challenge the systems, stories, and symbols that shape our sense of power, history, and belonging. Blending imagination with critique, the exhibition explores cultural myths, colonial legacies, and the forces that construct contemporary life. Timed with the 250th anniversary of the United States, it asks: what kinds of empires do we inherit, and what new ones might rise in their place?
Sponsored by the Brand Associates and the Glendale Arts & Culture Commission through funding from the Urban Art Fund.
