Mer Tun, Dzer Tun

By Artist Nelli Astvatsatrian

Mer Tun, Dzer Tun” translates to “our home, your home” and is taken from an Armenian folk song “Dle Yaman” by Armenian troubadour and genocide survivor Komitas. The installation seeks to reclaim and honor history, while laying testament to the resilience of indigenous peoples robbed of homeland everywhere. The finished product will be a quilt which features artwork from the Glendale, as well as people from Armenia and Artsakh, reflecting on what "home" means to them. Quilting is a powerful communal act, bringing individuals together to think about the convergence of personal and collective memory while creating a meaningful, inclusive object. Because of their collaborative nature, quilts tell stories while also existing  physically as historical objects passed down from generation to generation.

This temporary art installation is generously sponsored by the Glendale Arts and Culture Commission through funding from the Urban Art Program, and support from Glendale Library, Arts & Culture, Glendale Community Services and Parks, and the Adams Hill Neighborhood Association.
