"All the People We Encounter Each Day" depicts a crowd of people swirling like a school of fish created from layers of painted, cut paper.

All the People We Encounter Each Day depicts a crowd of people swirling like a school of fish, created from layers of painted, cut paper suspended from the ceiling with monofilament. The people depicted in the installation are based on individuals Amy Oates has seen in public. Oates explores crowds as representative of ephemeral moments where individuals converge to form something abstract yet familiar, embodying negotiations between personal and public space. As she sees greater density necessitating greater attention to social interactions, she explores questions about how we can learn to live within the crowd. She considers ideas about individual and collective identity, alteration, and sustainability.
